downsizing exercise. The decision is that the decision should be based on merit, with the best employees remaining while those who are underperforming are given redundancy. In order for this
to be fair it is necessary that the process looks at performance over a long period of time, not on only a short term basis where there is the potential
for short term influences to skew the results. The result of this was a scoring on the basis of the last three appraisals, with an additional allowance for notes to
be made if there are any special circumstances or if the employee has been with the firm for less than three years, with the notes to be used as a
tie breaker if needed. Each department head is responsible for complying the list of performance results for the all the staff in their departments, which also appears fair as they
know the employees and their performance. This appears to be a fair way of assessing staff, those who have under performed would have received feedback and notice of their
under performance during the review process, and are unlikely to have lifted that performance, otherwise they would not be in the lower performance category. However, there are a small
group of employees that are not subject to the performance reviews, it is noted that these have been placed at the bottom on some lists and the managements including the
CEO want to let these individuals go. This may be argued as less than ethical. Where a decision is ethical it need to be seen as fair and moral, but
without the scores there is not way to determine whether or not the basis of merit is being fairly applied. The CEO states that these employees, who have been with
