that his boss, Charlie, is receiving gifts from vendors. Company policy explicitly prohibits anyone in the position of ordering supplies and equipment from accepting even the smallest gift from a
supplier. This does not include samples of products for examination but it does include any type of gift the company would purchase. John has suspected various things like expensive pens
were gifts from suppliers. Other items included household appliances, auto accessories and even a three-day vacation. Once, John saw a supplier give an envelope to his boss. After much thought,
John believes he has three options. First, he can do nothing. This is the safest course because Charlie could fire him if he says anything. The second option is to
tell Charlies supervisor. This could also hurt Johns career with the company because he would get the reputation of a whistle-blower. Higher-level managers might be very wary of promoting John
in the future. The third option John considers is to confront Charlie with his knowledge and insist he stop accepting these gifts. Power and Authority There is a
clear difference in power and authority. Charlie has been with the company for ten years and is now head of purchasing. He has a reputation of making good deals with
suppliers, getting the company good prices. Furthermore, he has excellent relationships with his own higher-level manager and with the entire management team. John has been with the company for three
