The dilemma here is what should the hostel manager do, Alan has been improving greatly, there is little know as to what has happened, however, he is late and it appears he has also broken the no alcohol rule, should they report him to the court, which will result in him being taken into custody. The decision will depend on the ethical approach taken by the manager. A more liberal approach may seek to ensure that the action taken is in the spirit of the court, that the aim of the court order is to bring stability and prevent reoccurrence of the original crime, to protect both society and to protect Alan and the other residents. It should also be noted that the decision need to be made with no further information, which would make the decision easier. For example, if it was found that Alan had gone and got drunk, was late due to be stopped by the police following a fight then it is easier to make the decision to report him, rather than if the explanation is that he helped someone who had been attached and had beer thrown over him. This is why the decision has to be an ethical one. The framework will depend in the attitude taken by the decisions make in terms of the way in which duty and following the rules should be interpreted and the level of importance that is, or is not attached to the result that is achieved. ...
