Americans who were raised to respect life found themselves in the jungles of Nam, fighting for something they did not believe in, and stooping to levels that are unheard of,
even in wartime. They were called baby killers and in some cases, that was a correct assumption. Civilians were killed and some were killed purposely. Why? It is hard to
say. For the most part, these were mistakes, but upon close examination, some incidents that occurred in the course of the war seem to have been avoidable. In any
event, war is synonymous with loss of life. Yet, there are certain rules of engagement. There is protocol. When soldiers do not do what they are supposed to do, there
is a price to pay. Throughout history, there have always been rules, or standards, kept during wartime. While the idea of war crimes appears to be an oxymoron, the truth
is that there are some things acceptable in war, and things that are not. For example, it is held that killing soldiers is okay, but it is not okay to
kill civilians. Those are the rules. Although some might argue that one life is as good as another, the point made is the solider represents the state and the people
are merely innocent bystanders. At the same time, during a draft, one could also argue that young men are taken without their true consent. It is hard to be a
conscientious objector even if one does not agree with the war. In respect to the premise that there is a difference between military and civilian casualties, what is at the
philosophical basis of that dictum? In a hypothetical situation, it is supposed that the United States is fighting a war of self-defense against another nation that has attacked it. The
