honesty is not only an expectation but for many schools a legal requirement. Honor codes are often in place which require students to abide by ethical principles and, in many instances, to report cases of academic honesty to the proper authorities. Failure to abide by these honor codes is met with sometimes severe punishment. Punishments have been dealt for cases in which the student has directly committed an ethical infraction, cases of plagiarism for example, as well as in cases in which a student failed to report an act committed by another student. Given a scenario in which such an honor code exists, an honor code which not only prohibits plagiarism but also which demands that known cases of plagiarism be reported by students, a student has no alternative other than to report such acts. An example of a scenario such as that outlined above might be found in a situation in which a student (we will call him Brad) submits a philosophy paper that was written by someone else as though he was the author. Bill is in obvious breach of his schools honor code. What about Carl though? Carl is Brads best friend. Although he is aware that Brad has committed an act of plagiarism he is reluctant to turn him in to the proper authorities because of their friendship and the prevalent view among students to just look the other way which such problems arise. Carl realizes that if he does not report Bills plagiarism he could face serious consequences. He could, in fact, even be expelled.
