have laws for which the international companies must abide. Weak governments however are more easily infiltrated by unscrupulous corporations. Even well meaning enterprises that expand perhaps reason that they are
in these nations for the betterment of the people, but in some way, they fool themselves. Businesses must pay attention to how the people fare as a result of their
expansion, and also, they must turn a blind eye to profit. By ignoring the bottom line in favor of social justice, corporations can actually try to help the people in
the countries in which they choose to break ground. A great part of the temptation not to do this is that the companies can make a lot of money due
to the availability of cheap labor in certain regions. Globalization has created a world where labor is a commodity that can be found in a variety of regions and for
vastly different prices. Some complain that trade treaties like NAFTA and expansion to third world nations sets up a situation where workers are exploited. On one hand, the cheap labor
in underdeveloped countries takes jobs from Americans, but on the other, people who will work for a pittance are not adequately compensated. In the end, all workers lose. With a
model where laborers are exploited, everyone loses except for the corporations. Some of these problems go to child labor, but there are other issues. Diller (1999 as cited in Dickson,
2001) lists some of these as freedom of association, the right to collective bargaining, forced labor, social issues as well as health and safety concerns. There are also problems
pertinent to the unfair treatment of women. In fact, some countries do not treat women as equals even in the twenty-first century. Of course, not all international workers are exploited.
