considerations in the art of persuasion, Johannesen (2010) offers the scenario of a hypothetical speaker attempting to persuade his audience to contribute to a cancer research program. The premise is
that this speaker includes among his valid arguments, statistics that he knows to be false in order to scare his listeners into believing that there is a higher probability that
they will develop this form of cancer in their lifetimes than is accurately true (Johannesen, 2010). Given that the speakers persuasive goal is worthwhile, Johannesen asks the reader to evaluate
the ethics of this situation and whether or not the speaker should be judged as unethical for using an unethical strategy. As this indicates, ethical issues are intrinsic to persuasion,
which compels speakers to make conscious choices about what strategies and rhetorical devices to use to achieve their goal of persuading others to adopt their beliefs, attitudes, or take specific
actions (Johannesen, 2010). A variety of ethical theories have been formulated, each of which can be applied to the ethics of persuasion. The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM)
