Edith Wharton is best remembered for her examination of New York society in the 1800s.
Much of this work is interwoven by the themes of silence, isolation and illusion. Such is certainly the case with "The House of Mirth" and "Ethan Frome".
The characters in these works find themselves isolated from society as a whole partially because of their own ideologies but also because of circumstances which are beyond their control.
The first task of this paper will be to explore "Ethan From" in regard to its encapsulation of the themes of silence, isolation and
illusion. This story does indeed epitomize these themes. Not only is he married to a woman he does not love, a woman who is much older than him
in age, much colder than him in compassion, and a hypochondriac to boot, he has found someone that he can find solace in. Rather than acting as a salve
to cure his emotional ills, however, this romantic interest acts as a wedge in his soul. Ethan is forbidden from acting on his feelings because of the societal mores
of his day. The closest town, Starkefield, symbolizes these mores. Central to the message conveyed in the novel is its location. Starkefield stands as a symbolic representation
of Ethans loneliness and isolation, even as a representation of the silence which characterizes his life. Even it geographic location in relationship to the farm and where he would
rather be, in fact, conveys this symbolic representation. The diversity of opinions and beliefs expressed by the people that live in Starkefield is critical to this symbolic representation as
