Essay / Research Paper Abstract
3 pages in length. Habitat is only as strong as its least dangerous resistance; for estuarine benthic habitats, the individual and combined components of disturbance and predation can manifest in severe organism compromise. Some of the most harmful aspects are those brought about by man, however, even some seemingly natural - yet detrimental - occurrences are still to some degree instigated by human behavior. As with virtually all forms of life, it becomes the survival of the fittest when predation and/or disturbance alters an estuarine benthic habitat. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

(Woodin, 2002). Fragile, slow recruiting animals are considered to be most susceptible to disturbance, while the least sensitive species are generally fast growing and have good recruitment (MacDonald et
al, 1998, pp. 257-268). For example, researchers have found that the alewife population has decreased a full seventy-five percent in many fresh
water locations over the past thirty years; salt water populations have not managed much better. Inasmuch as alewives represent a complex community of organisms and their environment functions as
an integral component in the underwater ecological unit, it is not surprising the numerous life systems this particular species supports includes a variety of other aquatic and airborne life, not
the least of which is mankind. For some, the silvery fish exemplify a place of safekeeping; for others, however, they represent an overly abundant meal ticket. The ecological
impact that alewives maintain upon the entire planet is such that their very existence helps to effectively balance all underwater inhabitants. Indeed, from an ecological standpoint, the vast implications
of such a tremendous ecosystem have innumerable consequences if just a single element is removed from the overall composition; that alewives are members of an ecosystem that sustain life both
above and below the water, it is imperative their diversity and life-giving properties be forever protected (Stevenson et al, 2005). When the alewife
