In essence, personal written words offer us so much more than simple written history. With this in mind the following paper examines the journal of Esther Burr and Eliza Southgate Brownes letters, individually and then comparing and contrasting them along with the experiences seen or read about in "A Midwifes Tale" by Martha Ballard. The works cited were provided by the student requesting this paper and thus have no true bibliographic reference to be recorded herein. The paper argues that both Burr and Browne lived lives that were far easier and far more privileged than that of Ballard who was a hard working individualistic woman. Esther and Eliza Esther Burrs journal is actually a compilation of letters written to her dear friend Sarah. We note that Esther was the daughter of one of the nations most influential ministers and her husband was a minister as well. She appeared to be a woman who essentially had a great deal of leisure time and it seemed that most of her time was spent in some form of entertaining or conversation with one person or another. From this perspective thus far it can perhaps be stated that she was a woman who was financially well off. She told her friend how her days (while her husband was gone) were spent with her brother reading to her and yet she claimed to be so lost without her husband.
