Examination of the literary devices employed by Echeverria demonstrates the way in which he used this primary metaphor to create an allegory that dramatized the conflict between civilization and barbarism that characterized nineteenth century Argentina. First of all, the slaughterhouse is huge, which is symbolic of the extensive political and military power that Rosas commanded. All the blood from the slaughterhouse is directed toward one ditch, which can be viewed as symbolic of "all the power and responsibility" held by Rosas as dictator of Argentina (Webb). The ditch also has symbolism in that this was the "traditional dumping ground for bodies of prisoners" that were murdered by the "dictatorial police" (Wagner). Blood is also an image that appears frequently. For example, there is blood on the "shirt and sash and face" of the "butcher" and also when the Unitarian dies, blood is the central image-"a torrent of blood spurted, bubbling from the young mans mouth and now and flowed freely down the table" (Echeverria cited by Wagner). The image of blood serves to "link the surface story of the Slaughter House" to its "underlying political statement" and purpose, which is to underscore the brutality of the Rosas political regime. One of the principal duties of the "Slaughter House folk," as Echeverria refers to the Federalists, is to collected "fines for violations of the rules" (Echeverria cited by Webb). The "rules" are geared around showing support for the Federalists though the wearing of "insignia, mourning sash, haircuts and the slogan Death to the savage Unitarians" (Webb).
