all but destroy hopes of colonies ever really being formed. The people had to deal with new land that reacted differently to planting, and new people, the Natives, who gradually
became more problematic in the European eye. Dangers existed in a new way yet these people stuck it out and eventually the colonies became the dominant colonial power in North
America by the year 1763. Over a hundred years of struggle finally paid off for the original settlers. The following paper examines how self-government, opportunities, profitability, and by opening the
land to everyone from abroad led the colonies to a place of strength and independence. Success for the Colonies One author notes that, "Within the span of a
hundred years, in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, a tide of emigration -one of the great folk wanderings of history-swept from Europe to America" (United States Information Agency ,
1954). This was essentially led to the success of the building of a nation out of the wilderness as people, "impelled by powerful and diverse motivations, built a nation...shaped the
character and destiny of an uncharted continent" (United States Information Agency, 1954). It is also noted that once the people of the new land realized what and how to
grow and produce goods they found themselves with great products worthy of selling overseas. In addition, the East Coast was a coast that seemed created for landing with ships which
made the idea of exporting goods even better (United States Information Agency, 1954). Some places were perfect and provided lush crops for trade, such as New York which offered fertile
