Sans Roentgen Outpatient MRI Center already has decided to purchase a single MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) machine and now seeks to determine a per-use price that will return maximum value
but still fall within third-party payers "normal and customary" price ranges. Price Comparisons There is a wide range of prices for MRI scans
across the United States. Grady (2007) reports that an MRI "scan costs $1,000 to $2,000 in the United States, sometimes more." An MRI clinic with sites in several
cities offers a base price of $465 in Buffalo only; the same companys lowest price in Detroit is $650 (Pricing, 2007). Adding a second scan site or contrasting dye
that a physician may order significantly adds to the total cost, bringing what appears to be a low-cost MRI scan into the range mentioned by Grady (2007).
A caveat on the low-cost scans is that the company offering them is targeting Canadian customers rather than focusing on their local markets. The company
seeks volume rather than per-use profitability. Setting the Price Thus an acceptable price for service can range from $500 to $2,500 depending on
the area of the country. Medicare pays $650 toward the price of an MRI scan in Sans Roentgens area. The machine cost figure to be used is $2,100,000.
MRI machines typically do not exceed $1.2 million for highest-resolution machines (Report, 2006), so the difference of $900,000 here is assumed to provide for the cost of support personnel,
physical space, maintenance and other associated costs of use. Useful Life MRI has become a routine and respected diagnostic tool over the years,
