It might be contended that the development of and adherence to religion is one of the
primary characteristics of a civilized society. Obviously, religion serves a wide variety of purposes in society. One of the most important of these is the provision of a
greater human purpose and ethics of being. The intent of this paper is to explore the differences in what, to most at least, constitutes a religion and what constitutes
a cult. Through belief in religion individuals are given both explanation and goals by which they can gauge their lives and those of
others. Religion gives ultimate purpose (Haarsma, 1996). While religion can function to challenge and change prevalent social beliefs, it must also be remembered that religion is an evolutionary
phenomena, that is it changes just as social beliefs change. Religion could, in fact, be said to function as a mirror which not only reflects predominant social beliefs but
also which supports them. This contention is evidenced throughout history yet it is not something that happens immediately. All religions start with just a few followers and gradually
gain more. Who is to say then that every religion, at one time in its history, would have been more accurately classified as a cult? Interestingly, the term
