has to understand the role of technology in the international system. In other words, the North-South divide is about the fact that different parts of nations, or regions, develop
differently according to resources and climatic conditions. It is natural that the South, with its greater amounts of sunshine and more rural components would have less industry. The situation exists
throughout the world and though this idea is not often discussed anymore in the context of the United States. The U.S.A. really does serve as a good example of what
the debate is all about. Why? The South in the U.S. continues to be a region where the cost of living is low. The cities are smaller. People in the
South can live in mobile homes and do not use as much electricity or oil. They do not have to buy heavy winter clothing. Off the bat, there is a
decided cost of living advantage. In the United States, the most important cities are in the North such as Boston, New York and Philadelphia. It is where all the
good hospitals are, where industry is and where businesses have flourished for centuries. When going down south, there are businesses, but life is at a slower pace it is more
rural. Due to this, it seems that education is better up North as well. This situation exists for many counties around the world and while that is a simplistic explanation,
it is one that can at least provide a semblance of an idea as to why there are regional differences. More recent examples of how this can happen come from
Britain as there had been a fierce debate in the 1980s where it was suggested that the North was not allowing the South to share in its economic growth.
