anti-Semitism. In the film, a Jewish boy hides his identity from the Nazis but he is accepted as one of them. It seems that a young boy can get
away with anything, but the protagonist manages to survive; yet, he does not thrive. Still, the film in addition to providing much fodder for those contemplating the problems of World
War II, Hitler and the Nazi party, provides insights into the integration of Europe. One is prompted to ask, in light of the film, what are the prospects for transcending
national identity? Does this affect the prospects for peaceful coexistence between distinct national communities? The film suggests that transcending national identity is possible, but not easy. Actually, the film
more supports the idea that this cannot be accomplished. Yet, what is gleaned from the film as well is the idea that Germany has to be strong in order to
secure its position in Europe. Due to its geographical location, its history and its size, Germany has heightened interests in maintaining its position and preventing Europe from drifting apart (Schauble
& Lamers 72). Additionally, as noted by Westermann, Germany has difficulty exporting its culture (150). Indeed, one has to wonder whether or not Germany could survive unless it was intact.
It had trouble assimilating. It had to maintain its strong position and upon reflection, one sees a very fearful nation pretending to be more powerful than it really is.
While to some extent that is the case, and one can see this in the film Europa Europa, there is the danger of underestimating Germany. Westermann suggests that Germany is
in fact powerful in terms of its structure (151). That is something that many would agree with and so Germany is a rather mysterious nation. In fact, what came from
