Michel de Montaignes series of essays on self-knowledge are important
for a number of reasons. For example, from a literary point of view it is notable that Montaigne was the first to develop and use the essay form of writing,
which allowed him to discuss his personal thoughts and feelings about a topic. Later authors were able to use this form as a device by which they could discuss any
kind of topic, and relate it consistently to their own opinions on the issue.
Montaigne took himself as the subject, and provided an exposition of all aspects of his ideas and feelings relating to his own behaviour,
life and ideas. He was concerned with exploring his place in the greater scheme of things, understanding his relationship with the world, and the way in which he was meant
to interact with it. The essays consequently cover a wide range of topics, as Montaigne considers his own physiology, his relationship with nature, and the issues of philosophy which arise
out of these thoughts. The essays are deliberately unstructured,
in the sense that they let him move from subject to subject in a way which is apparently random, although this form allows him to demonstrate the way in which
