African American writers in the history of the United States. They were born a year a part, with Zora having been born in 1901 and Hughes in 1902 and as
such they serve as powerful authors of their time, both offering works from different perspectives as it relates to the African American in the early 20th century. The following paper
examines two essays, Zora Neale Hurstons essay "How it Feels to Be Colored Me" and Langston Hughes essay "The Negro Artist and the Racial Mountain." The essays are examined separately
and then compared and contrasted. Zora Neale Hurston Hurstons essay is one that attempts to describe to the reader what is like to be her, and what is
like to be her and be black. Her essay is incredibly intriguing because she presents herself as a human being first, rather than an African American. In fact she illustrates
over and over how all people have issues, and she does not feel angered by her past as a slave. In the opening line of her essay we also
are given a very humorous outlook which seems to set the essay off on a very positive note: " I am colored but I offer nothing in the way of
extenuating circumstances except the fact that I am the only Negro in the United States whose grandfather on the mothers side was not an Indian chief" (Hurston). In such an
entertaining and humorous line we are immediately drawn into a realm where it seems we will be accepted no matter our race. Her line indicates that race is not an
issue, a reality she ends the essay with as well. Throughout her essay she indicates that there are times she feels very colored and other times that she does
