about life or about the narrator. In the case of philosophy one often sees an examination of life and mans existence and it engages in logical processing. With that in
mind the following paper examines elements of poetry and philosophy as seen in Alexander Popes Essay on Man. Essay on Man by Alexander Pope Popes Essay on Man
is a very lengthy compilation of many epistles that examine or discuss various thoughts and examinations. Pope, as the title suggests, is delving into the humanity and perhaps attempting to
understand and decipher what humans are all about. As such one can well assume that it has philosophical elements because the existence of man is one of philosophys biggest focuses.
In looking at Popes work, in the very beginning, one notes that in the first epistle he offers up an examination of God: "I. Say first, of God
above, or man below/ What can we reason, but from what we know?/ Of man, what see we but his station here,/ From which to reason, or to which refer?"
(I i 1-4). In this there are clear, and strong, elements of philosophy as the narrator is clearly inferring the existence of God as well as the questioning of Gods
existence and the meaning of life. It is a discussion of what man knows, what is truth, and what may be sheer conjecture on the part of humanity. These are
