mother is Asian and my father is from Belgium, and I have struggled with my identification in a variety of different social and ethnic collectives. In fact, I have
sought to identify myself with Asian American communities, with European immigrant communities, and with the broader youth culture in the United States, all the while recognizing that I didnt really
fit in to the traditional views of these different groups. One of my greatest desires in entering college is that I will meet people with similarly diverse backgrounds, who have
also demonstrated some problems in understanding their personal lineage, including ethnicity, while determining a role for themselves in the youth culture. In recent years, I have learned that people
of different ethnicity, people of minority group status in the United States often have a greater understanding of the conflicts individuals experience when faced with attempts at personal identification.
I also believe that I have had a rather parochial view of the world and that my parents have supported a kind of familial interdependence that has not fed my
desire for personal expression. I view college as a time when I will experience a greater degree of freedom than ever before and will learn from many different kinds
of "teachers." I believe that the students that I meet will be a part of the learning experience, and will expose me to different cultural, economic and academic perspectives.
My ideal view of interactions in college is that I will seek out people who have vastly different social, cultural, and familial experiences that me. One of
the problems for young college-aged students is that it is more comforting to seek out friendships with people who are similar; who have similar backgrounds and similar socioeconomic status.
