questions about the essay. Discussion The framing device: A framing device is just that: its like a picture frame, setting off the story or essay. In this case, the student
should immediately recognize that the framing device is the authors shoes; first in the conversation between him and the janitor that begins the story; and at the end, when he
humorously thinks of having them bronzed (Gates). The shoes effectively put "parentheses" around the story. The frame contributes to the readers understanding of the earlier event by making it clear
that it is in the past. Whatever is about to be discussed, in other words, is already over. That means the reader can relax; Gates has survived to tell his
tale. Also, because it is in the past, the narrative is likely to be more objective and less emotional than it would be if he were telling it as it
happens. Who was the original audience for the story? The student will see that there could be several answers to this question: Gates could be addressing African Americans; or
families; but these seem too limiting. Consider what happens in the story: Gatess leg shatters; he endures a ridiculous misdiagnosis by a bigoted white doctor; he undergoes three surgeries when
hes a teenager; he endures years of increasing pain until finally he has a hip replacement at age 40 (Gates). Through it all, he simply keeps going. It seems then
that his target audience is universal, for all human beings are challenged throughout their lives, and although his challenge may be more severe than most, it is not particularly unusual.
However, he never gave up, he fought, he endured, and he finally prevailed. If the essay were rewritten for doctors, it would have concentrated much more specifically on the procedures
