the development of this unique form of conveyance. Escalators In essence, "An escalator is a conveyor type transport device that moves
people. It is a moving staircase with steps that move up or down using a conveyor belt and tracks keeping each step horizontal for the passenger" (Bellis, 2007). (A good

a practical device but rather as a form of amusement (Bellis, 2007). It is first noted as possessing a patent, or a patent that relates to the escalator, by an
individual in 1859 (Bellis, 2007). It was a patent that involved a steam powered unit (Bellis, 2007). It was not, however, until 1892 that a real escalator patent seems to
have arrived coming from Jesse Reno (Bellis, 2007). However, as one author notes, in remembering his own past and delving into the
history of the escalator, the earlier patent was used in many places. The problem it seems was that there was not the use of electricity that there would be in
later years, a source of energy that would ultimately bring the escalator into the world at large. The author notes, "Steam-driven elevators were around in 1859, but who would install
