A 6 page overview of the escalating trend of drug use among our nation’s youth. This paper emphasizes that, despite all of our societal efforts to intervene, it seems that drug use not only continues but continues to increase in its frequency and the number of people affected. The conclusion is reached that while the drug problem we are experiencing is definitely not irreversible, we must analyze our efforts and failures of the past to develop programs which more effectively address the problem. a problem which is growing on a yearly basis. Not only is drug use counterproductive to the family and school environments, in many cases it is linked to criminal
and deviant behavior. Both illicit drugs and alcohol fall under the classification of drug use and each presents tremendous problem for the youth as well as society. It
seems that despite all of our societal efforts to intervene drug use not only continues but continues to increase in its frequency and the number of people affected. We
must ask ourselves, is this problem simply irreversible? Indeed, the teenage drug culture is alive and well. It is one of the
many challenges which face todays teens. It is also one of the greatest threats to their safety, health, and welfare. In most cases the causative factors behind teen drug
abuse revolves around declining societal mores. While at one time activities such as sexual promiscuity, drug and alcohol use, and violence were definitely frowned upon by society, its seems
that today these activities are condoned if not encouraged. There is, however, a number of theories which address how to discourage drug use and the criminal and deviant behavior
to which it all too often leads. In effect, drug use is a deviant behavior and one which has been studied by a number of researchers.
One of the most recently updated books on the subject is Allen E. Liska and Steven F. Messners "Perspectives on Crime and Deviance" (1998). In
