in Greek and Roman art. Eroticism in Art There was a period in history when Greeks began to actively employ nude figures in art. One author illustrates that
"In reading Andrew Stewarts book, Art, Desire, And The Body In Ancient Greece, one can come to some sort of conclusion about the origins of nudity in Greek culture.
It is suggested that nudity originated in athletics...in 720 B. C. at the Olympics" (DeConinck. 2001; nudityeroticism.html). It is believed that Orsippos of Megara was running a race of the
200 yard foot race when his loincloth fell off. "He continued and won the race. From this moment on it seems that men started to perform athletics in the
nude. Nudity among males became desirable in that they could show off their manly nature" (DeConinck. 2001; nudityeroticism.html). DeConinck (2001) presents us with a quote from Stewart who states the
following: "They saw the custom as a concrete manifestation of such desirable manly attributes as courage, strength, speed, fitness, and so on, all of which naturally create a handsome body.
To this view, nakedness signifies that the subject is a man of personal excellence, outstanding both inside and out (26). Thus, the nude male becomes a symbol of
