action. One of Van Dammes most popular films was the militaristic science fiction retelling of Frankenstein, 1992s Universal Soldier, directed by German-born filmmaker Roland Emmerich. In order to
gain an aesthetic understanding of the film, it is recommended that the student who is writing about this topic first consider a general overview of the film, and what it
is attempting to convey. The plot involves a soldier named Luc Deveraux (played by Van Damme), who becomes lost from his unit while fighting in the Vietnam War.
He encounters sadistic Army sergeant Andrew Scott (played by Dolph Lundgren), who has the perverse hobby of killing his hostages for their body parts, and proudly displays the ears as
a necklace (Theodore, 1995). Luc and Sgt. Scott fight to the death, but are transported to a top-secret medical base, where they are transformed into cyborg warriors dubbed as
Universal Soldiers (Theodore, 1995). These killing machines are used by the government as a high-tech way of combating terrorism. The UniSols have bodies of unmatched perfection and their
memories have been supposedly erased, which allows their minds to be easily programmed. However, the conflict arises when Scotts memory returns, and he returns to the barbaric creature he
was in the jungles of Vietnam. Seeing Scott slaughtering innocent victims prompts Lucs memory to return as well, and trails the sergeant in hopes of ending his savagery, with
