all dreams must end, and World War I shattered these to bits on the battlefields throughout Europe. Americas entry in the war was late, but nevertheless, left a profound
impression on all the young soldiers who had survived to pick up the pieces of their lives. A collective innocence was gone forever, and the world no longer represented
a safe haven in which everyone could take secure refuge. It is recommended that the student who is writing about this topic consider that World War I served
as Ernest Hemingways literary rite of passage. As a result of the war, he sustained serious injuries during the fighting in Italy, which required months of convalescence. His
wartime experiences left young Hemingway a changed man, and he spent the rest of his life trying to cover his physical and emotional scars by affecting the macho image of
big-game hunter, lover, fighter and globe-trotting adventurer. After the war, America looked somehow different to Hemingway, and he could find solace nowhere, even in his hometown of Oak Park,
Illinois. So he joined fellow writers like F. Scott Fitzgerald on a seemingly endless journey of carousing throughout Paris in an attempt to regain the youth that had been
taken from them. These American expatriates wandered aimlessly from place to place, never establishing roots anywhere, and were just as author Gertrude Stein dubbed them for all time, a
