December 2000 Introduction Not a large story for Poppa Hemingway, and sometimes difficult to find, "The Killers" can usually be located in a book of short fiction
called Men Without Women., 1927. It is a coming of age story infused with layers of meaning, not unlike the coming of age process itself. The Story Hemingways dialogue
is sparse as always, similar to Summit the setting for this short story. Hoodlums have comer into the town, just to see what they can see, and maybe to
do just what they do. No plan not to worry. Summit has a sense of itself, least it thought it did until our two wayward clowns entered the picture.
And do they think they are funny - of course, like an old vaudevillian that no one laughs for any more, who has chosen to be his own laugh track,
rather than learn or do something new. Through out the story, one particular phrase keeps cropping up. "Whats the idea?" Nick asked. "There isnt any idea."
(281) - is the response. Hemingway, a man who chooses he words as though he is picking the last ripe fruit in the world, repeats something. Dont
you find that a bit strange - the word polisher himself. The one who selects and sniffs each word as though he has been tracking it. Repeats, "there
isnt any idea." OK my word-hairs are on alert. And I am prone to suspect that we are approaching the philosophical realm here under the guise of something
