World War I. Over the course of the novel, Frederic undergoes a great deal of change, which alters his worldview and causes him to abandon the war, to make a
"separate peace" (Hemingway 243). The novel pivots around Henrys personal growth and its ramifications, and, in so doing, provides a serious anti-war statement against the "Great War" and its
leaders. An examination of this work shows that the impetus for Frederics change comes when he learns the meaning of love from Catherine Barkley. At the beginning of the
novel, Frederic is a man who has already been alienated by the war. He seems hollow, interacting with his fellow soldiers, but remaining aloof from them as well. To Frederic,
the world seemed "all unreal in the dark... and not caring in the night, sure that this was all and all and all and not caring" (Hemingway 13). There is

about why he enlisted in the first place. However, Hemingways readership was well aware of the tremendous propaganda campaign that accompanied the
allied war effort. Young men were led to believe that the military experience would somehow be ennobling, a glorious affair that, granted, might require the noble sacrifice of ones life
for ones country, but that the allies were defending freedom against an enemy that was portrayed as sub-human. Certainly Frederic was exposed
to this propaganda before joining. Therefore, since he is young, it is conceivable that Frederic was once one of the idealistic young men who saw war as a glorious adventure.
