Released in 2000 and directed by Steven Soderbergh, the film Erin Brockovich is based on a true story, which dramatizes the catastrophic health consequences that can result from environmental pollution. The following essay, first of all, summarizes the plot of the movie, which draws on the true-life experience of the people of Hinkley, California, and then discusses how that situation is presented from an ethical perspective. Summation of the movie plot The film begins by picturing Erin Brockovich, a single mother with three children, searching for a job. During the course of this search, a Jaguar collides into her dilapidated car and she goes to court seeking damages, taking her case to the firm of Masry & Vititoe (Coulter, 2011). She loses her case and the implication is that this was due to her revealing clothes, inappropriate language and the revelation that her children resulted from multiple failed marriages, which all combined to convince the jury to view her less sympathetically than they did the successful defendant, a doctor, and his picture-perfect family (Coulter, 2011). Irate over losing her case, when Ed Masry assured her that she would win and desperate to find a job, Erin manages to browbeat Masry into letting her work as a clerk in his law office (Grant and LaGravenese, 1999).
