with no education in law or research, was working as a file clerk for a small law office when she came across papers concerning the medical problems of residents of a small California town. Intrigued by the fact that a large utility was paying for medical bills of Hinkley residents, Brockovich investigated. Her research, eventually, was instrumental in winning the largest toxic tort injury settlement in US history for the people of Hinkley, California -- $333 million paid to 600 Hinkley residents (Erin Brockovich-Ellis, 2004). The following analysis of this film focuses specifically on the way that the movie portrays the research conducted by Brockovich, which uncovered the truth behind the devastating medical problems plaguing the people of Hinkley. In 1991, Brockovich was seriously injured in an car accident. She hired the firm of Masry & Vititoe to represent her case and went to work for the firm as a file clerk after the case was resolved. While organizing paper in a pro bono real estate case, Brockovich discovered medical records that served to stir her curiosity. After obtaining permission from Ed Masry (played by Albert Finney in the film) she begins to investigate. The papers in the Hinkley file implied a connection between the townspeoples medical problems and the pollution of the towns water table by Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E). Brockovich instinctively felt that the case had merit and deserved more attention than was being given to it by her law firm. The film shows Brockovich (Julia Roberts) going from door-to-door in Hinkley, surveying the people of the town as to their medical condition and also their connection with PG&E.
