Indeed, contemporary times have changed the very roles women portray in within the movie industry, as it can readily be argued that the birth of feminism is particularly responsible for the drastic personality modifications of the female persona in such films as Erin Brockovich and Chocolate. No longer are women portrayed as the meek, mild, doormat types who drop everything when their families bellow. This viewpoint could be interpreted as a scathing reminder of being a woman existing within a patriarchal system with little influence in her life, let alone the lives of others around her. The second wave of feminism, however, was instrumental in setting a precedence unlike any that had come before it, in that the movement went to great lengths -- and without concern for how its members would be perceived -- in order to create the fervor that was ultimately produced from its presence. Throughout history, patriarchy has been responsible for designing womens role in society; based upon a conviction of inferiority, male authorities were then able to design lifestyles for women, including approved activities, mannerism, education, sexuality and religious pursuits.
