Erikson claims that there are eight stages, but the first six stages emerge prior to middle age (Turkes, 1999). The authors staging process begins with infancy where trust is what is essentially established and goes on to toddlerhood where issues of autonomy are addressed. Then comes early childhood and middle childhood where a variety of things are learned. Adolescence is a time of identity and young adulthood is a time when intimacy is discovered. Middle adulthood changes things as people become more interested in the next generation and finally, older adulthood often involves acceptance or despair. These stages are generally accepted in the realm of psychology. To be more specific about the stages, it should be noted that during the sixth stage, or the time between 25 and 45--or early adulthood--intimacy is a strength (Weiland, 1993). Some theorists peg Eriksons theory to embrace the age 19 through 40 parameter for this stage and the subsequent stage 40 through 65 ("Erik," 2005). Others suggest that around the age of 45 through 65 there is the stage of Generatively vs. Stagnation, where the idea of Caring becomes a strength (1993). This emerges from an internal conflict that often is found in adults (1993). Generatively may be defined as being the ability to provide for future generations (1993). It is an idea that makes sense. As people near the older years, they realize that any day, they could cease living and that is part of the natural order of things. It would not be unexpected for an eighty five year old to pass away. They realize that their time will soon come and that they must prepare themselves for that final stage ...
