Each of Eriksons stages has a duality, a crisis that must be resolved successfully for the person to move on to the next stage successfully (Boeree, 2006). While there are similarities between Freuds stages and Eriksons stage and between Piagets stages and Eriksons there are very explicit differences. In terms of Freud, Erikson dismissed the notion that everything was sexual in nature (Boeree, 2006). Boeree (2006) commented that Erikson was "much more society and culture-oriented than most Freudians." As for Piaget and Erikson, Piaget was approached intellectual development from the biological points of view while Erikson approached development from the psychosocial point of view This writer is within Eriksons Stage 6: Young Adulthood which spans ages 19 through 40 (Boeree, 2006). The crisis at this stage is Intimacy vs. Isolation (Boeree, 2006). These are the years when an individual is expected to learn how to develop long-lasting relationships, love relationships (Boeree, 2006). It is more towards the beginning of this stage that individuals are seeking to establish strong relationships, to find companions and to find that one person to love (Harder, 2002). Consider todays world. following high school graduations at about age 18, an individual goes on to higher education, further training or right out to the work world. The focus is really on earning a living or preparing oneself for a profession or occupation. These people are not generally looking for a permanent, lifelong relationship but they may well be looking for companions.
