Store, , November 2010 properly! Erik Erikson proposed eight stages of psychosocial development begin at
birth and end at death. He believed that these stages were sequential and invariant. They are sequential in that each person journeys through the stage in order and they are
invariant in that Erikson believed that everyone progressed through these stages. Erikson presented his stages as a series of crises with the need to resolve the crisis in each stage.
The stages with examples are: 1. Stage 1: Infancy (Birth to age 1 year). Crises: Trust vs. Mistrust. Infants must depend completely on others to meet their needs to
survive, e.g., nourishment, warmth, safety, etc. Infants develop trust when their needs are met. If these very basic survival needs are not met, infants will not trust other people or
their environment. Remember the Olson twins? Television audiences watched these infants develop during that television show. Audiences also saw how an atypical family (their mother had died and the infant
and then, toddler girls, lived with three men, including their dad. 2. Stage 2: Toddler (Ages 1-2). Crisis: Autonomy (Independence) vs. Doubt (or Shame). Infants become toddlers and they learn
to crawl and walk, gain a certain amount of self-control over themselves and they begin communicating in ways other than crying. Toddlers who are allowed to make mistakes will gain
