Here, a child will become secure or insecure, dependent upon his experiences at this stage ("Stages of Social-Emotional Development," 2005). Wong (1998) writes: "If an infants physical and emotional needs
are met in a consistent and caring way, he learns that his mother or caregiver can be counted on and he develops an attitude of trust in people. If his
needs are not met, an infant may become fearful and learns not to trust the people around him." The physical, social and emotional characteristics of each stage are important, but
the first stage is perhaps most important because each stage builds on the former. If the childs physical needs for warmth and food are not met for example, then he
or she will suffer just as if an emotional need for love is not met. A child cared for by a depressed mother will likely do harm to the child
unwittingly. Similarly, if the childs social needs are not met, they will suffer. This is why play dates are often made at early ages. Socialization, the meeting of physical needs,
and the provision of love are very important at this phase. For the rest of the stages, the meeting of physical, emotional and social needs are important as well. The
second stage takes place at about eighteen months or up to four years of age and this represents the struggle between autonomy and shame ("Stages of Social-Emotional Development," 2005). Here,
