valid in many aspects and for the most part their theories are used as a foundation for understanding the development of children. The following paper examines the two different men
and their theories. The paper then presents a comparison and contrast of the twos theories. Erikson Erikson believed the central theme to childhood development, and life development, was
the ego identity. "To Erikson, the ego is a relatively powerful, independent part of personality that works towards goals such as establishing ones identity and satisfying a need for mastery
over the environment" (Individual Differences). His approach to personality is often referred to as ego psychology. He also believed that a persons life could be divided into 8 different stages.
In these stages Erikson believed that certain crises evolved and if the person was to advance to the next stage of development they had to somehow handle that crisis
in a positive manner in order to move forward (Individual Differences). In relationship to his theory as it relates to children he has the infancy stage, the early childhood
stage, the preschool age, the school age age, the adolescent age, and the young adulthood stage (Individual Differences). The last two stages of Eriksons were adulthood and old age (Individual
Differences). In the following we see the conflict that is associated with each age: * Infancy
Trust vs mistrust * Early childhood Autonomy vs shame & doubt * Preschool
