development in youth. Most people, in their youth, come upon a time in their lives when they make choices that will affect the rest of their lives, and they come
upon a time when they are essentially faced with their own identity in relationship to desires, morals, dreams and many other elements which make up ones personality and identity. These
issues relate to ones internal identity as well as their communal identity that they present to the world, and that they adjust to meet the needs of that external world.
Erikson does not really spell out a concrete and specific theory regarding this time in a persons life, or any particular path that all people follow. What Erikson does is
offer many different examples of how individuals go through something of an identity crisis in their youth. Identity: Youth and Crisis In the beginning of his work Erikson
states "In the twenty years since the term was first employed in the particular sense to be discussed in this book, its popular usage has become so varied and its
conceptual context so expanded that the time may seem to have come for a better and final delimitation of what identity is and what it is not" (Erikson 15). He
moves on to discuss the foundations in observation through a clinicians journal and through the notion of totalitarianism. In these two sections he discusses such things as social sciences and
Freud, as well as the ego and community, further working towards defining how many different studies may need to come together to truly understand identity. And, in a discussion of
the issue of totalitarianism he states that, "it is becoming equally clear that the polarity adult-child is the first in the inventory of existential oppositions...which makes man exploitable and induces
