Essay / Research Paper Abstract

A 5 page essay that critically examines Carolly Erickson's biography of Henry VIII entitled Great Harry. Not only was Henry VIII one of the most pivotal figures in history, having been a major force in the Reformation, but he is fascinating n a personal level. Erickson does not attempt to offer fresh perspectives on Henry VIII as a ruler, rather her purpose is to construct, from a thousand "slivers of his reality" garnered from letters, official documents and dispatches, a composite picture of Henry VIII as a person, as "Great Harry." In this goal, Erickson's biography succeeds quite well. No additional sources cited.

The reader sees how Henry VIII moved inevitably from "Great Harry" to the section Erickson entitles "Old Harry."
