In his book, The Anatomy of Human Destructiveness, Erich Fromm discusses the biologic and sociologic origins of human aggression. Early on he subdivides aggression into two distinct varieties; aggression
that he calls "benign", which is necessary for the preservation of ones life, and therefore, defensive, and a "malignant aggression", which the author associates with destructive, cruel and purposeless.
Fromm believes that the benign, self-preserving type of aggression is common to all members of the animal kingdom, while malignant aggression is only found in the human. Fromm sees this
latter form of aggression as a consequence of "advanced" civilization, for as civilizations become more and more complex, the individuals frustration tends to increase proportionally. For example, in the
simple hunter-gatherer society, each individual knows his or her role from an early age, and individuals tend to be more or less equal in status (with understandable exceptions for the
age of the individual). As the society becomes more complex and specialized, individuals find themselves in ambiguous positions, especially when their place in society is not as clear cut,
leading to frustration, ambiguity, disappointment, the feeling of not belonging to a particular group, which can cause one to feel disassociated from their place in the world, and perhaps, eventual
