not he was typical of humanists of his day. Defining a "Typical Humanist" Humanism began during the Renaissance, that extraordinary period of European history in which music, art,
philosophy and other intellectual pursuits flourished, and new modes of thought came into being. This is particularly important since until the Renaissance, men were largely governed by the church,
which taught that men are sinful, that they can "only sin" and that their "choices were limited to choosing sin" (Christian humanism). Humanism broke the churchs stranglehold and taught
that men are thinking beings who are capable of making their own decisions (Christian humanism). These decisions may be right or they may be wrong, but they are left
to the individual (Christian humanism). Where the church insisted that man could not understand the world, humanism said that he could, and based on that understanding, he could then
make "moral choices which affect his own destiny" (Christian humanism). The humanists who believed and taught this doctrine were by and large good Catholics who strongly supported the church; but
they differed from the clergy by refusing to accept the churchs teachings blindly, and accepting without question doctrines and ideas they found unreasonable or bizarre (Christian humanism). They attacked
the more blatant abuses of the Church, such as the sale of indulgences, but on the whole "remained devout, orthodox and sincere" (Christian humanism). In short, the typical Renaissance
humanist may have disagreed with the Catholic Church on specific points, but didnt feel compelled to satirize it or call its basic tenets into question. Erasmus, as well see,
