is the need for expert knowledge, but where the use and accreditation of professional qualification have been under developed, received less attention or had a low take up rate due
to the lack of emphasis that has been pace don them where they are available. This is true of equine qualifications. In the United Kingdom qualifications are available from
a range of sources, the most popular are from the British Horse Association, but they are not the only choice and the wide range of qualifications and access to those
qualifications reflect the diverse nature of the equine industry and the educational routes to qualifications in the country. Qualifications can be gained though the educational route, or though the
equine schools. For example, a range of courses are available though collages. If we look at a single example this may be seen as representative of some of the choices
that are open to an individual wanting a career with horses. The Welsh Collage of Horticulture has an equine unit. Here a BTEC First Diploma and a The BTEC National
Certificate are offered as one year courses (WCH, 2003). The BTEC National Diploma and the Higher National Certificate / Diploma in Equine Studies are two years courses, with the latter
offered in conjunction with University of Glamorgan (WCH, 2003). These are all targeted at those who want a full time career with horses and have formal entrance requirements unless the
