at the age of eleven, as Equiano and his sister were taken from their family home by slave traders while their parents were tending the fields. Examination of chapter 2
of Equianos narrative suggests that Equiano survived this devastating experience due to the interaction of his lively intelligent mind with his environment. The text shows that despite severe depression, sometimes,
longing for the release from suffering that death would bring, Equiano never stopped observing and learning, as he was consistently curious about the activities of his captors and trying to
figure out their precise nature. Initially, after his immediate capture, Equiano found comfort in the presence of his sister. However, this comfort did not last long as they were
soon separated (Equiano 50). He describes being sold numerous times to new owners, with each sale moving him further away from his own family, reducing his chances for a successful
escape. At each new location, he gains what comfort he can from those around him, the companionship of other children or mothering offered by his masters wife. In these
descriptions, readers begin to glimpse the resiliency and intelligence of this child, as Equiano adapts to new circumstances and new trials. He mentions learning several new African languages within the
course of these exchanges, indicating that he does this easily due to similarities between the tongues. However, the fact that he learns these languages, indicates how alive and observant Equianos
intellect is, as it is clear that learning a new language comes easily to him. Furthermore, it is also clear that Equiano thinks through the consequences of his actions.
