among HIV-positive pregnant women in Thailand" researchers Ratchneewan, Sawatphanit, and Zeller (2009) investigate two ethically sensitive issues, HIV and psychological state. The researchers stipulate in their report that they
only included subjects in their study that had been informed about the purpose of the study and that had agreed to participate. Informed consent, of course, is among the most
pressing ethical issues in any form of medical research. Informed consent pertains to the target populations right to control information that is collected regarding them. An individual must
be competent, of course, to grant such consent. In cases where an individual is mentally ill, underage, or otherwise incapable of understanding the full consequences of their consent, informed
consent should be obtained from the legal representative of that individual. While this report stipulates each of these individuals was of legal age to give informed consent they do
not discuss their mental status as it might apply to this participation. This omission is particularly glaring given the psychological realm of this study. In addition to the
importance of patients knowingly agreeing to participate in such research, another ethical concern that should be addressed, particularly regarding these sensitive issues, is patient confidentiality. While the researchers clarify
