unanimous decision (Gooden 230). Fifty plus years later, African Americans are still struggling to obtain a quality education, as segregation becomes obliterated by problems perceived to be more pressing, such
as inadequate funding for poor school districts and the large achievement gap between black and white students (Gooden 230). Looking at the status of reaching the goal of full equality
in education in the U.S., while it can be conceded that progress has been made, it must also be recognized that this civil rights goal has not been achieved, despite
decades of effort. Active desegregation programs did not begin until roughly a decade after Brown when the Supreme Court mandated that the States had to take action. Four decades
of desegregation efforts find that, in many American cities, schools continue to be segregated by race and income (Gooden 230). Black children are frequently alienated from school and their parents
just as frequently do not feel a sense of ownership in regards to their schools (Turner 217). African Americans complain that many teachers do not seem to care for their
black students as people and show "scant patience with those who cannot keep up with the lesson," as well as demonstrating "little interest in the childrens non-scholastic needs" (Turner 217).
High Schools and Equality Over the last several years, it has been frequently touted in the nations newspaper that young black students are finally graduating from high schools at
the same rates as white students; however, not everyone agrees with these glowing reports ("News and views" 15). However, government statistics rely on self-reports from individuals, which ignores the fact
