and models can be applied and the overall perspective. Equality and diversity in the workplace will cover a range of issues, many of which the student, prior to this course,
may never have considered as an issue that needs to be looked at in this context. For example, the fact that 88% of jobs taken by women are in the
service sector, these are generally lower paid jobs and may be seen as reflecting the patriarchal workplaces where glass ceiling still exist and although there may be legislation there are
many barriers in terms of access and gender equality then becomes mute when certain jobs are dominated by a single gender. The application can be seen with concepts such
as the wage penalty as overall women have lower wages than men, despite equal wages legislation (Lockton, 2004). The difficulty is the way that this can be enforced, concepts such
as work of equal value may help, and the use of a token man for predominantly female work has not prevented cases moving forward, the gap is lessening but the
barriers still exist and these are not only practical, but social barriers. Looking at gender issues increases awareness of the need for equality and other areas such as
race and ethnic origins. It is difficult to argue that there is equality here, the lessons learned here are not only in terms of decision, but the way social pressures
make themselves felt and impact the patterns of work seen of many different minatory groups, such as higher levels of self employment for those of Chinese extraction and the way
