The question of equality of the genders has impacted practically all levels of our society. The prison system is no exception to this influence. Women
have rightfully argued that they are equal to men in every other aspect of society so why should they not be equal to men once they have been convicted of
and imprisoned for a crime? At the same time, however, it must be acknowledged that women are different that and that those differences demand differential treatment to some degree
once a woman enters the prison system. This obvious need for some degree of differential treatment, however, does not equate with inferiority or relative sensitivities, only that different genders
require different provisions if they are to be treated humanely and to have the best chances for rehabilitation. Some would contend, of course, that to afford separate facilities for
women and men is an affront in terms of the feminist movement which insists that women and men be treated in all aspects of societal interaction. To the contrary,
the provision of separate facilities for men and women is not only the most economical approach to corrections but also the most effective.
The differences which exist between men and women inmates in the prison system range from differences in need for family planning, occupational training and even physiological and mental distinctions which
must be addressed if a woman is to be both humanely and effectively incarcerated (Henderson, 1998). The injustices which were in place in criminal justice were directly attributable to
