Epistemology Epistemology is the study of knowledge. More specifically, "it is the branch of philosophy that studies knowledge" (Heylighen, 2000). The goal is to determine what is true and what is false (Heylighen, 2000). Although some authors offer a definitive definition of epistemologies. Niessen and colleagues (n.d.), for example, state that "epistemology is and always has been characterized [sic] as information that has been rehearsed by individuals. . . . . epistemologies are seen as rather stable and a-contextual phenomena" (p. 3). This suggests that epistemologies do not change, they are true knowledge regardless of context. This premise will be addressed later in this essay. There are four types of knowledge that are usually recognized: * Intuitive knowledge which is based on feelings rather than on empirical facts. This type of knowledge would include things like faith, intuition and ones own beliefs (Department of Linguistics & English Language, 2008). In research, this would include devising or creating a new idea that one wants to research (Department of Linguistics & English Language, 2008). * Authoritative knowledge is more discreet because it is based on information that one gains or obtains from persons who are considered experts. This type is obtained through books, people and other sources that are considered to be generated by experts. The strength or weakness of this type of knowledge is dependent upon the source one uses (Department of Linguistics & English Language, 2008).
