Discussion The Story of an Hour has a fantastic twist and ends tragically; A Dolls House ends uncertainly, but with some hope that Nora will be able to make a better life for herself. The Story of an Hour can be summarized very quickly, but the meaning is conveyed with great subtlety. Mrs. Mallards husband is apparently killed in a train wreck and her friends and family are uncertain as to how to break it to her, as she has a weak heart (Chopin). Finally, her sister Josephine gently explains that Brently Mallard was dead. Mrs. Mallard struggles to contain her emotion, which her family thinks is grief but in reality, she is experiencing joy and relief-her life is her own once again (Chopin). Then Brently comes in-it was all a mistake; his wife has a heart attack and dies (Chopin). Chopin has painted a portrait of a woman who is married to an essentially good man, but who is still stifled by the relationship. She knows she should feel sorrow and she will: "She knew that she would weep again when she saw the kind, tender hands folded in death; the face that had never looked save with love upon her" (Chopin). Her husband is a kind man who loves her very much. Still, as she sits alone in her room and thinks about what has happened, she has a sense that something is coming, and as she recognizes what it is, she struggles to beat it back, knowing that according to societys rules, its wrong to feel the way she does (Chopin).
