mystery of tracking down an unknown killer virus. Rather than relying on dry statistics, dates and other epidemiological data, the writer makes the crisis real to the reader by describing
the lives of victims and the brave investigators who ultimately identified Ebola. This writer/tutor was particularly struck by the contrast between the care that was possible for African victims of
Ebola and the care given to a British researcher, Geoffrey Platt when he became injected. Platt was placed on large doses of intravenous interferon; received carefully balanced intravenous feedings designed
to balance his "diarrhea-disrupted electrolytes"; received amphotericin B lozenges when he developed Candida fungal infections in this throat and also infusions of plasma from an Ebola survivor (134-135). The superior
care given to Platt aided in his survival, but such care was simply unavailable to the African Ebola victims. As this suggests, the inequity of healthcare resources are striking in
this account. Another aspect of the mystery of Ebola concerns how investigators tried to find a connection between the epidemic in Yambuku and the one in Nzara. As one researcher
claimed, ultimately, it would be found that "Nature had, indeed, rolled an incredibly bizarre set of snake eyes" and there was no definitive connection between the two outbreaks (136). The
cause of the Ebola virus was never determined, other then to say that it was African origin. The reader has to wonder, however, what factors may be instrumental in the
development of Ebola, as it seems logical that these factors, while not connected, might have existed simultaneously in both Yambuku and Nzara.
This writer/tutor was also struck by the complexity of the healthcare situation in Africa, which was exemplified by the situation at the Yambuku "hospital," which was run by Belgian Catholic
