In order to consider the philosophy of Epicureanism and
the way in which it was regarded both by its adherents and its opponents, the student could look at the way in which the philosophy developed, the impact which it
had on social culture, and the contemporary reaction to it from other groups such as the Stoics and the Christians. To take as the thesis that Epicureanism is the best
lifestyle, therefore, it is useful to define the lifestyle itself and then go on to consider the objections which were raised to it by other sections of society and whether
their objections were valid. In this way the strengths and weaknesses of the philosophy can be assessed and the extent to which the criticisms of other contemporary schools were valid.
Epicureanism propounded a lifestyle
which was concerned with promoting material happiness and took a materialistic perspective of reality. Happiness, although referred to by the Aristotelian term eudaemonia, had more in common with the concept
